Being raised by an Avid Outdoor Sports Writer, it was only natural for me to start our Magazine, Everything Horses and Livestock ®. In my youth, I talked with my father about writing some small books on living off the land in our

area and caring for animals.

Out of high school, I gave riding lessons, trained horses, boarded, produced a variety of events and sold items from my own retail business, while also working for others. I wrote articles on proper feeding and horse management for magazines, websites and newsletters. It was very enjoyable to listen to my father edit them for me. He said, “It’s good to write how you feel, what you believe, just get rid of the extra words!” My father and I never got around to writing our booklets before he passed away November 1, 2009. I have many fond memories of my father and our time together. My passion is proper care and feeding of all animals and helping others enjoy their ride. Our family loves to hunt, ride and team rope. Flip through our pages. Enjoy articles, photographs, cartoons, word search, & fun news! This magazine is dedicated to my dad, mom, sisters, husband, son, family, friends, and everyone out there enjoying the ride! ~Jana T. Harrington Barcus He worked at the same publishing company for 62 years.

As spring transitions into summer it brings many exciting challenges and changes. It seems there is new life springing up all around us. There are weddings, graduations and celebrations. Where there once stood gangly legged children –now stand young adults stepping into new adventures and arenas. Whether they are hitting the rodeo circuit or the higher education path they are moving into a season of self reliance and self care. They carry with them all we have poured into them as we have prepared them for this very moment. FBEAP employ’s intentional interaction with horses that create opportunities to expose unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior in real time. This program is a tool that allocates lies we have believed to be true and replaces them with Truth that sets us free. The exercises we provide with horses create opportunity to expose unhealthy lies, and through the Holy Spirit healing will begin. Jayne writes what the FBEAP experience is like from a facilitator’s point of view: When I facilitate a session with the clients and the horses, the most amazing thing happens! Through the different activities with the horse, the client is able to see first-hand some strongholds they have been holding on to. It is a beautiful thing to witness someone let go of hurts and

When going through a bad experience no matter what level of “bad” you want to call it. We have it in our memory banks. An imprint that we may not even consciously realize is there. Every individual is different some of us push it so far back in our mind that we don’t remember. But it’s there. Thoughts can be dangerous when not controlled. We can be fooled into believing terrible lies. Our thoughts control our feelings. God warns us more than once about not letting Satan in our minds. Anything bad that comes into your mind is not coming from God. For example: “No one cares”, “No one loves me”, “I’m ugly”, “I’m a fat pig”, “I’m such a loser”. No matter if it is a thought, or if it is coming out of someone else’s mouth, when someone says to you; “You’re never going to be anything”, “What is wrong with you are you stupid?” “You are Worthless”, it’s a Lie. I promise you 100% that all those terrible statements are lies. God loves us and communicates with love.

Satan is using a moment in time to send you a negative thought. He will help you dream up a complete lie about someone else and he will have your thoughts going in a bad way quick. Next thing you know, you

Living Life Ranch is a place set aside for people of all ages to come and experience the healing power of love through a hands-on experience with horses. false beliefs that have held them back. " We continue to offer Horse Experience Lessons. We are almost booked for the summer.

I am mesmerized by the brilliant green hues that are filling my view today as I sit and consider the season at hand. The sights and smells of spring are everywhere. An army of Iris with their frilly coats and gowns fill the air with their sweet gentle fragrance. Huge white, pink, peony bushes branches - seemingly weightless yet strong and enduring. Sweet lavender fronds of the lilac are intoxicating with their fragrance and beauty. Flashes of yellow, and red flutter by as the birds scurry in flight to prepare their nests- they fill the air with song as they happily go about their path- seamlessly gathering, building, and weaving… Blue jays have appeared with their blue and white top notches and conductor suits directing the scene. The symphony of song brings excitement and comfort as its melody runs through my heart and mind. The surrounding fields are full of bleating baby cows, wobbly legged sheep are seen jumping in sideway ways that tickle my heart with the wonder of how in and magenta blooms sit upon the rounded

the world can they do that? Their antics bring laughter and lightness... The lake is alive with frogs and the fish are hitting the top of the water… ducklings of bright yellow leave their trailing v’s as they silently glide along. I breathe in deeply as I sit and sigh a sigh, of long held joys and memories. It won’t be long till graduation hats are flying, with Pomp and Circumstance

playing. The crack of the bat sending balls flying into the air following soon behind. The cool breezes of spring, giving way to the warm gales of summer, bullfrogs croaking their moonlight serenade as the fireflies light up the warm summer skies. Butterflies float effortlessly by and bees pack their pockets with the nectar the season brings. Deep greens replace the light yellow greens

of the horse. This program is Faith Based as well. It’s amazing how showing God’s love through working with horses heals confidence issues, repairs self-esteem and teaches positive communication.

These lessons are for children or adults to learn about horses, how to lead, groom, and ride. This is not riding lessons for any type of equine events. These lessons are providing knowledge and the experience

of spring- a new song begins to resonate as the locusts emerge from their shells, leaving them for little fingers to find and wonder over. The heat of summer brings splashes of joy from pools and lakes. Garden hoses once scurried from, now provide reprieve from the sweltering heat. Water balloons and blackberry cobblers fill our days with pleasures fit for Kings. Our chins covered with the overflow of juice from perfectly ripened peaches, send our taste buds to the moon. The night sky explodes with fire as we celebrate the brave and fearless acts that those who like us, experienced all the blessings above and fought to secure our right to experience the same. The patriots whose hand goes to their brow-or over their heart as they stand in reverence, in respect, and awe.

Old glory is excitedly hung on display a symbol of unity, of sacrifice, honor, and faith. These blessings the Good Lord put into motion for our good are rare treasures. We are rich in witnessing them and being woven into the fabric of this life song season we are blessed to have. We don't get to pick the number of days, weeks, or years, but we do get to pick how we will live among the created and reflect light, life and truth. The outside world would like to taint our view and steal the very miracles happening around us everyday. That tactic is as old as time itself. It comes in this season as no surprise, yet my view is focused on the life around me. The smiles, hearts and hurts that walk this beautiful path alongside me. Enriching its beauty with their presence, love and hope.

not know or understand in the current season or the ones to come. Yet as I sit and consider my view I am again in awe. Mesmerized by the brilliance of His beauty, his plan and creation. My view is directed by the one who holds tomorrow- this is where I will focus and serve from. This view gives strength to the powerless and rest to the weak. It gives Hope of new life, new beginnings, and the promise of steadfast repetition. It is amazing where the view from my sliding glass door can take me. How it enriches me and fills me with Joy and Hope. It strengthens and prepares, it entices and reminds. It refines and fulfills. I hope you are refreshed by our journey and view. I pray it strengthens and encourages you as together we walk in his beautiful view. - Gerri

The Horse Next Door by Vicki McCarty

I’ve always had a deep love for animals and the desire to take care of them. Therefore, when I saw the “new” horse next door watching me feed our own horses, I had to take him a handful of grain. As I approached him, he got that yearning and “can this really be happening” look in his eyes. He gratefully accepted my gift. And just like

that, a six-year love relationship began with the horse next door. It wasn’t long before Ole Horse was at the fence watching for me daily. We provided him with his own tub for some grain twice a day. I would climb through the fence and brush him, talking to him while he ate. He would show me his appreciation by pushing his nose into my belly and almost lift me off my feet.

If it was feeding time and I didn’t see him at the fence line I’d raise my voice and call him. The wind would pick up the sound of my voice and carry it to wherever he was in the 20 acres next door. He would come galloping, mane flying to get his feed and receive his daily loving from me. Yes, eventually his owner saw what was going on. “You’re

going to spoil my horse” he told my husband and I.

in the shade and minus 10 with numb feet but we never left his side until he was done. He took his sweet time too, knowing the cows wouldn’t bother him as long as we stood there. I also befriended the same neighbor’s bull. I fed him apples over the fence. He was like a big puppy dog, wiggling and eager for those apples. One evening Ed said “Stop feeding that bull! That’s enough apples!” The old bull looked at Ed, threw back his head and roared as loud as he could. Needless to say, he got one more apple. By making friends with the bull, there were times he did me a favor and took his girls over the ridge so Ole Horse could eat in peace. I knew what I was doing. I think Ole Horse had nine lives like a cat. He sliced his ankle severely once and Ed doctored it. Another time, he fell under our pole barn along the fence and got cut up trying to get out.

Ed doctored him then also.

But the time that stands out most in my mind was the day we believe he got heat stroke. Ed called me at work and warned me because he knew I would see Ole Horse down when I drove by coming home. He said “It’s not good. He may not make it”. Sure enough, when I came by, I saw him lying near the fence with Ed and several others standing over him. He had fallen on the steep grade near the fence line and landed with his head pointing downhill and his head and neck over a very hot wire. Fighting back tears, I went on up to the house. Not knowing what to do with myself, I went out by the fence staring toward where Ole Horse would come running for his dinner. Then, what! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Ole Horse was

I said, “That’s okay, he deserves some spoiling!”

Actually, he was thrilled at our attention to his horse. Ole Horse wasn’t actually his but his father’s. When his father passed, he brought him home and put him out with to wander with the cows. He was a cow man, not a horse person. Ed and I asked him the horse’s name. He looked at us surprised. “You call him by his name. Its Old Horse!” The years passed by and despite us feeding him, Ole Horse was losing some weight. We put him on senior feed and soaked beet pulp. Of course, the cows had a great interest in his food, so no matter what the weather was, either Ed or I would stand with him fending off cows until he was through eating. I remember days of 110

One evening I took some apples down to see him. I petted and brushed him. Talked with him while he ate his apple. I noticed he was swaying a bit on his feet. Then some friends came by and I left him without giving him the second apple. I have always regretted that because it was the last time I saw him alive. He must have walked a few feet from the fence and went down. His owner found him lying there the next morning.

running towards me! Was I seeing things? Apparently after I drove by, Ed and the neighbors drug him by his tail up into the shade. They had to get him out of the ditch and off of the hot wire, along with getting him out of the hot sun. To this day, they don’t know if the chiropractic effects of the tail pulling or the shock did it but after they cooled him down, he jumped up and ran to get his dinner.

I sit here writing this with tears in my eyes. I still miss that old rascal. He came into my life for what seemed like a short time. Actually, it was six years! I wished many times he was my own. But I know I gave him many hours of happiness. And if we had not taken care of him like we did, his life would have been much shorter. I know mine is better for loving him.
