Dennis Goodwin, President, of Kansas Horse Council, is a Financial Consultant with American Century Investments in Kansas City, MO. A graduate of Iowa State University, he has been involved with horses in various capacities for the past 25 years.

He previously bred and raised Hanoverian horses and boarded a few horses for friends. Dennis is a member of several equine organizations and enjoys all disciplines of riding. He lives on his farm outside Lansing and is the proud owner of two American Quarter Horses, and Irish Draught, and a Hanoverian. He has been involved with the Kansas Horse Council and Equifest for several years and looks forward to advancing the interests of horses and their owners in Kansas.

Marty Bloomquist, Vice President, of Kansas Horse Council, has won state, circuit, national, and world champion honors in cutting horse, ranch riding, dressage, assorted Western events, English Pleasure and Equitation.

She was 2016 NSBA Champion in Amateur Ranch Horse Riding and owned the NSBA Open Ranch Horse Riding Champion Horse at the ABRA World Show in Tulsa. Marty has served as show steward for the KSU Equestrian Team and has also served on the Colby Community College Equestrian Team Advisory Board, as well as several horse association boards. She is currently Vice President and Activities Director of the Douglas County Trail Riders in Lawrence. In addition to vast equine knowledge and experience, Marty brings a wealth of business, marketing, and management experience to the KHC board. Marty rides and resides at the Dancing Star Ranch near Tecumseh and believes, “There are no shortcuts to achieving good horsemanship. The journey takes time, patience, and a constant quest for knowledge. It’s a fun and continual process!!”

Dr. Justin Janssen was raised on a farm/ranch in Ellsworth County Kansas. He attended Kansas State University graduating in 1972 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

After a two-year Army Veterinary Corp tour, he and Mary moved to Indiana where he worked as a predominately equine veterinarian for 35 years, owning his own practice the last 33 years. While in Indiana, Justin volunteered extensively with numerous horse related activities, namely the Indiana Horse Council and served in several roles with that group. In 2007 Justin and Mary returned to Kansas and have since enjoyed the opportunities to reconnect with Kansans in the livestock industry. Justin absolutely enjoys his days in the saddle helping with ranch work.

Jim Thomas got his first horse when he was 10, and horses have been a part of his life ever since. Jim is an avid trail rider and is dedicated to preserving and maintaining trails on Kansas public

lands. He and his wife, Cheryl, authored the Equestrian Trails in Kansas guidebook, which offers information and maps of public trails in Kansas. He is on the board of the Kansas Trails Council and is a founding member of Back Country Horsemen of Kansas. He communicates regularly with public land managers in Kansas keeping them informed of the volunteer efforts of many equestrians in Kansas, who are committed to keeping public trails open and maintained. Jim has been involved with the Kansas Horse Council since 1995 with many years on the board, including a term as president. He is currently KHC Trails Director. Jim and Cheryl live near Melvern Lake and enjoy spending their retirement seeing America by horseback!

Dr. Craig Barnett has been a horse owner and equine enthusiast his entire life. After receiving his doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri, he owned an equine/small animal veterinary practice in Spring Hill, KS. Several years later he started his industry career as an equine technical services veterinarian in the animal health pharmaceutical industry. He is currently the director of the Merck Animal Health equine veterinary technical services team. Barnett is actively involved in many aspects of the equine industry.

He currently is a member of the American Horse Council Health & Regulatory Committee, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Infectious Disease Committee and is the AAEP representative on the American Veterinary Medical Association Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee. In addition to his veterinary work, Barnett also enjoys working with horses in his free time. Barnett boards several retired, senior horses on his ranch in Paola and enjoys driving a wagon team and trail riding as often as he can.

Jana Barcus has ridden horses since she was 2 years old when she was introduced to riding an aunt’s ponies and still loves the horse “smell” and the feel of her horse’s back as she rode bareback.

With years of experience properly feeding various animals, training horses, giving riding lessons, boarding, working cattle, fitting saddles, tack & producing large fun events, she is excited to be working with the Kansas Horse Council. Jana has enjoyed various jobs from riding and training horses for a top Paint Horse Show barn, field representative for various Coops and Feed Stores, producing events and now running the Better Equine store and magazine Everything Horses and Livestock . Growing her knowledge with continued education and communication is a must in the Agriculture World, and she loves helping people with their horses, small animals and livestock. In years of competition, she has won championships, saddles, cash & awards in Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, & stock events. Jana has developed a love for constant learning of new technology and has built websites and helped others with graphics, social media and more. Jana's mantra is "Life is a Journey--Enjoy the Ride!

Kallie Emig grew up in Manhattan, Kansas and has been heavily involved with all types of horse activities her whole life. She showed competitively with the APHA for most of her youth career and developed a passion for training horses in high school.

She attended Kansas State University as an Animal Science major for 3 years and then transferred to Colorado State University for their Equine Program. Kallie graduated CSU in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Equine Science and Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. At CSU, she was a member of the Reserve World Champion Horse Judging Team and the Versatility Ranch Horse Team. Currently, Kallie is the Breeding Manager at the Kansas State University Horse Unit and enjoys starting colts and competing in Versatility Ranch Horse shows.

Greg McDonald is semi-retired from a career in corporate banking. He has been a board member of Saddle & Sirloin in Kansas City for the past six years and currently serves as president. Saddle & Sirloin is an 80 year-old organization featuring all facets of equestrian riding, an Olympic shooting course, and dining facilities. Greg has served on the organization committee for the Saddle

& Sirloin Ranch Rodeo the past three years and applied that knowledge to the 2019 Equifest of Kansas ranch rodeos. He was born in Colorado and lived in Texas from the age of 10. Greg earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance & Accounting and a Master's in Finance from the University of Houston. He spent 20 years with Bank of America, becoming Senior Vice President before moving to Standard Chartered Bank, a British based corporation. In addition to domestic assignments in Texas, Colorado, and California, Greg and his family spent 20 years in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, and London. He continues to consult for a London based private equity firm specializing in investments in Africa.

Sheryl Strathman is drawn to Cowboy Dressage because it provides an opportunity for horse enthusiasts of all abilities to progress their horsemanship skills within the boundaries of respect for the horse and respect for their fellow horseman. It isn’t just about pleasing a judge in a competition. Horsemanship is a life-long journey exploring a deeper level of partnership with your equine companions and human friends. Sheryl’s show background, before Cowboy Dressage, includes AQHA all-around classes, NRHA reining and AQHA Ranch Riding. Sheryl is also a Cowboy Dressage Recommended Judge and Level 3 clinician. Her passion is studying biomechanics through the IHTC course of Science of Motion. The implementation of the biomechanics knowledge helps Sheryl and her students develop sound, athletic horses who are willing partners.

Cheryl Thomas is the Secretary for Kansas Horse Council. She also puts in countless hours working on trails, hosting events and keeping events updated on the KHC website.

Justine Staten is a familiar face to the Kansas Horse Council as she takes the reins of Executive Director. She has worked in the KHC office and is a regular volunteer at Equifest. Justine has extensive experience in the equine industry with family involvement in 4-H and the Blackjack Saddle Club. She

provides equine education at the annual Riley County Farm Bureau Ag Kid’s Day and was a long-time volunteer with the “On the Trail to a Cure” benefit ride for cancer, as well as manager of several other American Cancer Society galas. Justine is excited to bring her passion for all things equine to her new leadership role with the KHC!

Gabrielle Hamler joined the Kansas Horse Council office in August 2017 as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Kansas Horse Council. Gabrielle, “Gabby” is a native Kansan, born and raised in rural Miami County on a farm in Paola, KS. Horses captured her heart as a small child growing up and

have been a big part of her life, since. Upon moving to Manhattan in 1989 with her husband, Michael, it didn’t take long to get back into the groove of things with Quarter Horses and Paints. These days, Gabby enjoys frequent trail riding trips with her gaited horses. Previously, Gabby showed for several years in the Black Jack Saddle Club and participated in Kaw Valley Rodeo performances with sponsorship flag runs between events. She brings public relations and customer service experience based on years in retail, real estate and the insurance industries. Gabby will help with membership services, marketing, PR and social media as she brings her creativity, skills, and her passion for horses and the outdoors to actively promoting Kansas Horse Council and equines in the state of Kansas.

Pattie Stalder didn’t grow up with horses, only wishing for one. As a young adult she purchased her first horse and hasn’t been without one since. She and her husband, Bob, live at their Irish Gate Farm near Westmoreland, where they stand a Connemara stallion, JEF Sir Lancelot. Pattie enjoyed serving for 10

years as the Pottawatomie County 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl leader and has 2 daughters which meant lots of horse shows, barrel jackpots, overnight campouts, trail-riding and parades. When her kids grew up, she showed Western Pleasure at Paint shows and then began taking hunter/jumper lessons. She is honored to have served as the Executive Director of the Kansas Horse Council since 2007 and retired December 2016. Pattie is currently serving on the KHC Foundation Arts at Equifest Committee.

Liability Insurance FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the Personal Excess Liability Insurance administered by Equisure, Inc. for Association Resource Group (ARG) and their affiliates THIS INSURANCE IS EXCESS AND NOT INTENDED TO BE YOUR PRIMARY EQUESTRIAN LIABILITY COVERAGE.

When does my personal excess insurance start and end?

The coverage starts when your membership is approved and the premium is paid to Equisure. Coverage ends 12:01 am on December 31st of every calendar year.

If my membership starts in June, when will my insurance coverage start?

Your insurance will also start the month you purchase your membership. For example, you will have coverage for approximately 6 months if you joined in June and coverage for 12 months if you joined in January. In both cases the cover age will end 12:01 am on December 31st.

How can I get a copy of the Master Policy?

You should contact Equisure directly with proof of your membership and request a copy of the Master Policy or email your request to diane@equisure-inc.com. The Master Policy may not be posted on any websites or reproduced without prior written consent from the management of Equisure.

Do members get anything showing proof of coverage?

Yes. Association Resource Group will provide certificates of Insurance (a brief summary of coverages, conditions and exclusions), these may be distributed only to members. Like the Master Policy, the Certificate of Insurance may not to be posted on websites or reproduced in any fashion without written consent from Equisure.

How would this insurance apply if I have homeowners insurance?

This policy is excess over any other valid and collectible underlying insurance. If you have underlying insurance, such as homeowners insurance, this policy is excess over that insurance. If you have no other underlying insurance this policy would become primary. I am a trainer and run a horse breeding operation, does this insurance provide coverage for my business? No. Coverage for equestrian businesses and business related activities are excluded from the personal excess policy. Please contact Equisure for more information or to purchase Professional and General Liability insurance for your equine training activity and/or any other equine business operation.

If my horse is boarded away from my residence, would this policy provide coverage?

Yes, on an excess basis, any other equestrian insurance is primary. This policy provides coverage for equine related incidences away from your residence for which you are personally liable or negligent.

If I lend my horse to someone to ride, how would coverage apply?

This policy would be excess but you would have coverage for bodily injury and/or property damage to a third party for an equine related incident for which you are held legally liable.

Is my horse covered if it dies?

No. This policy does not provide animal mortality coverage for horses you own.

How are the individual and family categories defined?

Family Membership: "Family Member" includes "you", your resident spouse or partner and your children under 18 years of age. Individual Membership: If you have purchased an individual membership of Association Resource Group or its Affiliate Organization, the General Aggregate limit is the most we will pay for the sum of all damages claimed against you.

I fell off my horse and broke my arm, would this policy provide coverage for this?

No, not under the Personal Excess Policy. This is not a medical insurance policy. You would have to have your own health or accident insurance.

What limits are provided by this policy?

The coverage limit provided under this policy is a per household limit and is shared by all member of the same residence.

Can I increase the limits provided by this policy?

No.

Can I add an additional insured to this policy?

This policy provides personal excess liability insurance for you. It does not allow for the addition of additional insureds. If your barn has questions about the insurance provided, please fax or phone Equisure.

What should I do if I think I have a claim?

1. Write down all the details about the incident while they are fresh in your mind. 2. Get the names and phone numbers for any witness(es). 3. Do not admit fault or make any monetary payment. 4. Contact Equisure at 800-752-2472.
