Being raised by an Avid Outdoor Sports Writer, it was only natural for me to start our Magazine, Everything Horses and Livestock ®.
In my youth, I talked with my father about writing some small books on living off the land in our area and caring for animals. Out of high school, I gave riding lessons, trained horses, boarded, produced a variety of events and sold items from my own retail business, while also working for others. I wrote articles on proper feeding and horse management for magazines, websites and newsletters. It was very enjoyable to listen to my father edit them for me. He said, “It’s good to write how you feel, what you believe, just get rid of the extra words!” My father and I never got around to writing our booklets before he passed away November 1, 2009. I have many fond memories of my father and our time together. My passion is proper care and feeding of all animals and helping others enjoy their ride. Our family loves to hunt, ride and team rope. Flip through our pages. Enjoy articles, photographs, cartoons, word search, & fun news! This magazine is dedicated to my dad, mom, sisters, husband, son, family, friends, and everyone out there enjoying the ride! ~Jana T. Harrington Barcus He worked at the same publishing company for 62 years.

See The World Through My Eyes
Cracker Jack, a four-year- old Cee Booger Red bred gelding, was purchased by the Abernathy family in 2003. Hardly broke, Brad started riding and roping on him. Even though he was a goofy horse that didn’t pay a lot of attention, Cracker came along quickly. He heeled on him for about a year. Brad owns a great heading
horse by the name of Gizmo. With his wife Kandy on his heading horse and him on Cracker, the team won 3rd in a 10 Head Open Team Roping! This horse is amazing! The next winter, Kandy needed a breakaway horse, so Brad got busy. Cracker Jack is lazy, but just like on the heeling side, Cracker Jack really came on. In
doing so well at his new job, he helped their young daughter Jacey and Kandy both make the Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association and the United Rodeo Association finals in breakaway for several years. Kacey made her first finals when she was just in the 7th grade! JC and Cracker also made the Junior High School National Finals in Goat tying that same year. Kandy’s love is the breakaway roping. In 2008 Kandy had to have surgery on her arm. She continued to have trouble swinging her rope for 7 years following and did not rope at all. The time came for daughter Jacey to head off to college at NEO (Northeast Oklahoma) and Cracker went too. After a season of hard work, they finished their year Top 10 in the Region in breakaway, what a great horse! In 2014, Cracker developed a little spot in his right eye. But like we said before, this horse is lazy and kind of a goofy guy, he doesn’t pay a lot of attention

in his way of going so when he came up with a small spot in his eye, they figured he had bumped into something. No big deal, right? Wrong. Still at college, his eye started to
cloud over so he was taken to the vet. Infection in the eye was diagnosed so medicine was prescribed to fix it. His eye continued to get worse there at college, so he was taken to Missouri University where they found he had an abscess / ulcer that had developed a fungus in it. MU noted that this fungus is prevalent in the Midwest. It took over the right eye and was trying to get over to the left eye. JC did an amazing job taking care of him. He had IV’s in both eyes and she had to give him 4 shots, 4 times per day for 2 months. Cracker ended up blind in his right eye, but the left eye was saved. What dedication from all the family. Throughout this time, Kandy felt she was getting better, but her
arm was still giving her pain. Cracker returned home from his college run and one day their son Shane ask her to rope the dummy with him. Picking up a rope again was tough, but Brad helped her figure out

a different way to swing and rope since she had lost all her arm strength. He pushed her to rope the dummy and dedicated himself to help her get thru the pain and build her arm strength. It was hard work, they roped daily until Kandy could rope the dummy at least 15 times before her arm was done. For the first time in seven years, Kandy was ready to head out on the rodeo trail. And she did just that, ending the 2017 season just one out of going to the finals in the MRCA. As the 2017 season closed and the 2018 season opened, Brad helped Kandy keep Cracker legged and tuned up as she worked harder on her dummy roping, riding and hustling Cracker more out of the box. They are all a great team. Family helping family. “Cracker makes it easy for me to do my job” says Kandy in our conversation. Kandy fully believes that the success they have had this year is because Brad worked so hard with her and how she was riding him. He worked with her on horsemanship skills, hustling Cracker more and staying centered in the saddle and roping strong. Kandy started back rodeoing in the MRCA and URA for the 2018 season doing well. It was really looking to be a promising year to make the finals. One day in September, Kandy and their son Shane were in route to Guthrie, Oklahoma for a big roping. It was raining terrible and they decided to pull over to shut the windows on the horses. Kandy ran back quickly and
got the windows shut, as she quickly turned around to head back to the truck she seen two cars coming towards her side by side, knowing that there was no way that they were going to move over. As Kandy was frantically running to get back in the truck before the cars reached her, she hooked her arm on the trailer jack hook and it threw her against the trailer. She kept moving forward making it between the truck
and trailer into the truck just in time. With blood gushing from her arm and hardly being able to talk from lack of oxygen, she assured her family she was fine as they pressed on to Guthrie. When they arrived, Shane unloaded his horse, tacked up and unhooked the trailer. It was time for Kandy to go find a Quick Care to get an x-ray on her arm. Their x-ray showed a fractured wrist. Kandy begin

to cry thinking why. Why is this all happening? Cracker went through his injury, she went through her arm injury, they were both making such great progress at the rodeo’s and now another injury to Kandy. With a cast on her wrist, they headed back home after the event at Guthrie. She decided to go to her orthopedic doctor and have it check out. This time, the x-ray showed no fracture. They removed her cast and instructed light movement. She immediately started working thru swelling, pain and scar tissue so she could get back to roping again. Not being able to rodeo in September and October 2018 proved to be hard on their standing and mental confidence. Lucky for her, Brad kept Cracker tuned and legged up. Even with all the setbacks,
her and cracker made it to the MRCA finals in fourth place! The MRCA 2018 finals didn’t turn out as well as she hoped. Her arm was not fully healed nor ready to compete, the team was not quite ready. Despite the years of injury and the “not so good” MRCA finals, Kandy and Cracker also made the URA finals that were held in November. Coming into the finals sitting in 9th place, she had big hopes of a super finals. They had a super summer with winning 1st or 2nd at seven of the rodeo’s the entered. Cracker is working amazing and Kandy’s horsemanship and roping is better. A Fantastic Finals - Kandy roped a time of 2.4 in the first round of the URA finals, placing second and in the second round she roped in a 2.3, placing third.
She went into the short round of the finals winning the average. Drawing a stronger calf, Kandy was not able to make the run she needed to get the average win, but did drive her horse and roped in a 3.4, making her 7.9 on three head, placing her second in the average and moving her up to fourth for the year end. This accomplishment also qualified Kandy to rope at the first ever Rope for the Crown that is being held December 8th at The Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kandy and Cracker Jack have been working hard preparing for the trip and the event and we are excited to watch their journey.
Good Luck to Kandy and Cracker!

TOOLS OF THE TRADE by Matthew Jobe
I am often asked about the equipment I use for mounted shooting, so I thought I would take this opportunity to cover my favorite items. Since we are talking about shooting, let’s start with the guns. They must be single action 45LC. There are many good guns on the market, I
hammer and a short barrel. They are a tough, durable gun that have never failed me. When you purchase your 45s you will typically need an “action job” done on them. This usually includes lowering the hammer, lightening the hammer spring, and increasing the cylinder gap. This makes our guns faster and smoother! The black powder used is hard on our guns especially a blued finish. No matter the brand of revolver I would only recommend stainless steel finish. It is so much easier to clean and last so
much longer.
Now let’s talk about holsters. Holsters need to be durable and rigid. They need to hold our revolvers securely and in an easily accessible location. Holsters should also include a sight lock to keep your guns from bouncing out. I have had
use the Ruger Montado. The Montado comes from the factory with a lowered, widened

a few holsters over the last five years, my personal favorite by far are the professional grade custom holsters made by Fred Berschauer (913)- 660-2806 of Our Shop. I wish I had these years ago! They have a wide back plate for support, awesome tooling and engraving, a sight lock, and an adjustable rigging so we can set the angle exactly where we need it!
our horses for an exact fitting tree and does the leather work per our request. We own 5 of them, we love our McCracken saddles! SaddleRight Pads are what we trust to protect our horse’s
benefit in muscle recovery! Our performers are calm and cool yet always seem able and willing to keep working! Total Equine is an extruded kibble that is 90-95% digestible (more bang for our buck)! It also utilities chelated minerals (more useable). Its base is alfalfa not corn and there is no added sugar, like so many feeds. The dried kelp helps with circulation and keeping our horse’s calmer. It's an awesome feed!! Horses cannot over eat on it, reduces colic, and so much more. Read all about it at www.totalfeeds. com.
back. These pads are thin enough to have close contact yet supportive enough for protection. The core spreads out the saddle bar pressure evenly. It also allows shoulder relief and free movement for the horse to really stretch out and have a free moving stride. SaddleRight Pads offer protection, comfort, and the opportunity for the muscular system to rebound and rebuild. Contact Matt Jobe (660) 537-9542 or Better Equine (913) 731-2509. SaddleRight has a trade back program that’s unheard of! Once you own one of their pads you can trade it in at any time for any reason and get your new pad at half price!!!! Of course, we must fuel our performance companion. Total Equine is what we feed to every horse on the Ranch. We have fed it for 3 years now. The hoof was a very noticeable change in several of the horses. Their top line improved a great deal even when not being worked much. I really see a tremendous
For saddles we need it to of course fit our horse properly. I like it to be lightweight, be cut out under our legs for close contact, have an in-skirt

Patenice was born May 14th, 2007 and her mother passed away on May 18th, 2007. She was a fabulous filly and was not afraid of anything. As a two-year-old, I was able to do anything I wanted with her. At three, I started riding her and we were immediately going on trail rides and having a blast. I was very excited to have such a wonderful horse. In 2010-2011, I started to see a change in Patenice. She started spooking at things she had never had a problem with before, even out on the trail we started having major problems. I am not an expert, but I have been riding my whole life and never seen anything like this before. She was like different

Monday, September 3, 2018 Labor Day I sent you “Buck” today. He was such a good horse. He made you proud as an AQHA World Show Finalist in Amateur Heading (2004) and as a Reserve Champion in Amateur Heading at the Buckskin World Show (2003) I know you loved him as much as I loved watching you rope on him. But his legs could not hold him on this earth anymore. A beam of light came down through a crack in the clouds as the veterinarian pulled in the barn lot. Tears came from his eyes as his pain left him. I know that you welcomed him, and he has been restored like you.
Go now, Sue, and rope the Devils steers!
Love, Mama

since 2013. This was before we officially made the announcement that LLR was open for business. Her first experience, she went with myself and Stephanie to pick up Storm from a trainer. Kara was quiet, seemed shy but enjoyed being with us. We had her ride Mouse that night for the first time it was pretty busy in the arena with cows and horses. Kara enjoyed the whole experience. As she gained knowledge and continued t o grow in her horsemanship skills, Kara graduated from Mouse and moved to Storm. Storm is a very well-bred cow horse that requires an experienced rider, she and Kara have formed a great bond. Kara has grown into a wonderful horse woman; She and Storm have had many rides together. Several Clinics, Parades and trail rides. At one-point Kara had a serious knee injury and this altered her life style, not with just her horsemanship activities but with all her sports. I watched her as she struggled through her disappointment. God continually renewed her faith and gave her peace during this time, because of Him, Kara took the hard blows from the doctors and didn’t give up hope, she continued to focus on Jesus and serving him by helping others, in many areas of her life, both church and school. Even through some hard friendship experiences she has been faithful. Kara has developed into a strong leader. We are so proud of her as she has grown into a wonderful Christian woman who is now looking for
I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
Life is full of ups and downs, victories and failures. We feel so great when life is going well. Then, we have those moments when we slip, and we find ourselves losing balance. Sometimes we feel on top of the world; then we have those moments when we are just ready to give up. We don’t always feel strong. We need to “Cowboy up” even when we don’t feel we can. It seems like God is with us when things are going well. When things are not going well, and we are at our lowest, God is there with us holding us. His love is unfailing, and it will support us through the darkest of times. Don’t be afraid of your
own doubts. God is big enough to renew your hopes and restore your faith. He walks with us through everything whether our darkest moments or through our greatest moments- He is there. Every day we should thank him, for as many things as we can think of. Thank him for being with us in our sadness and ask him to help us heal and find joy. Ask him to give you hope and take away the worries from your mind and replace it with peace. When you celebrate something good say “Thank You Lord!” to show appreciation for being there always. We attended a few Cal Noyon’s Horsemanship Clinics we were able to take a few people both young and adults this summer. We continue to learn something new each time Cal and his wife
Gerri Groshong volunteered this fall to be a youth leader at our church New Life Community Church in Gardner. She reached out to me to see if LLR would be interested in participating with her Mentor Group this year. So, we have started our second mentor group this fall with LLR. We are working through the book “My Time with God.” We read daily from this book and come together each week to discuss what we are learning and how this has been pertaining to our daily walk. We are working with the horses as well. Last week we worked on Leadership skills from the ground and took the horses on a walk down the road. A passerby stopped and said to me “I may be wrong but aren’t they supposed to be riding those horses?” I laughed and said, “No you are not wrong, they are learning leadership skills from the ground first.” “If you can’t lead from the ground you shouldn’t ride.” He said, “Oh yes that
We enjoyed this clinic immensely. Working cattle is not easy by all means. Understanding how to communicate to them on horseback is challenging work. If communication is broken the struggle begins and makes things so much more difficult than it could be if you stay focused and keep effective communication going with your horse and team. As I thought about this was process it reminded me of when we stop communicating to God and start relying on ourselves to work or handle our lives. The struggles we have become so much harder to handle. The result is chaos that scatters us, just like losing communication when working the cattle. If you don’t keep focused on God, you will lose peace and experience anxiety and stress i.e. chaos. It is important to remember that He is always with us through it all. Our part is to continue to communicate with Him every day and stay in His word. The result is amazing hope and peace will be with you during the most challenging times. Just talk to Him always, every day, all the time.
Kim are great examples of true Godly leaders, teaching with amazing teamwork and are definitely horse whisperers we Brittany and Chance

It was such a fun experience, she and I both learned so much together.

until they are comfortable with dragging them. With each step you’re are introducing them to, remember to also concentrate on whoa and standing patiently as this is very important. I can’t stress enough to be patient and complete each step as your mini is truly ready to move on. Remember, sometimes this ground work gets monotonous, but believe me, it will lead to a mini that is a pleasure to drive. The reward of driving them is worth this time. that they are hanging in since the tugs are not hooked at this time for safety reasons. The reason I do this is because if they become spooked and bolt, you can step to the side and the cart will come loose, freeing the mini from the cart. Each step in the training process depends on how your mini accepts that step in the training. Keep them at that step until they are comfortable. Some mini’s take the cart in stride while others do not. If you feel they are not completely handling this step, take the cart away and go back to dragging the poles in our previous stage
