CURT PATE For more than a decade, Curt Pate has conducted demonstrations and clin ics on stockmanship, colt starting and ranch horsemanship throughout North America and Europe. A nationally recognized stockmanship instructor, Pate teaches techniques on how to put the proper pressure on cattle at a different angle and at varying amounts to help move them comfortably and without a negative experience – for the stockman or the livestock. ‘Sometimes you cannot see pressure or understand its effects until it has created a problem. When you force cattle to go into a pen, they may get excited, go on the fight, and become dangerous or very difficult to work. Negative pressure creates stress, positive pressure creates contentment. The horse is much the same and good stockmanship creates good horses and good horses create good stock”, Pate says. An avid environmentalist, Pate is passionate about grazing animals to improve the environment as well as for a profitable farm business. ‘We need to utilize the earth’s resources in a way that works like a good ranch, com bining Mother Nature with technology then adding common sense and integrity. With the growing public scrutiny of livestock production, improving our livestock handling practices will help the sustainability of the cattle indus try”, Pate says.

Featured in many programs on RFD-TV, such as NCBA’S Cattlemen to Cattlemen , Pate currently travels the U.S. as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s leading spokesperson on cattle handling. He is also the co author of the book, Ranch Horsemanship , published by The Western Horseman , and had a cameo role and served as a consultant on the 1998 Robert Redford film, The Horse Whisperer .

through competitive trail riding (CTR). This family-friendly equine sport incorporates strategy, pacing, teamwork, con ditioning, soundness, agility, and equestrian skills. Since 1961, the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) has sanctioned rides in six regions across North America, helping riders of all ages learn the sport of competitive trail riding. Alongside other equine enthusiasts, you can deep en the relationship with your horse while learning new skills and setting your own competitive goals in a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment. CTR is not a race, but rather a timed event. It is a distance sport competition over a measured trail that is completed within a window of time. It is a great family activity open to riders ages 8+ and all equine breeds. Presenters – Sarah J. She quickly became a horse lover and from 2014 2021, offered energy therapy to the horses at Zuma’s Rescue Ranch, an equine sanctuary in Littleton. It proved to be a life-changing experience. She also volunteered at Medicine Horse Program in Boulder, an equine assisted therapy facility. In 2020, Mary was a speaker at Denver’s Rocky Mountain Horse Expo. She is devoted to increasing awareness of the many benefits of energy therapy to both horses and their owners. “My goal is to strengthen the bond between horse and owner through a better under standing of the energy exchange between horses and humans, how horses are stressed, and help both owner and horse create a stronger partnership based on trust.” Tom Dorrance and Buck Brannaman are her sources of inspiration. In March 2021, she relocated to Kansas to be near her family. Her practice is based in Olathe. BULL PARKER Although Bull was born in Oklahoma City, he has been a Kansan since his young childhood. His greatest influence in his life was his maternal grandfather. "Pa" still farmed with horses and was always breaking in a colt for either driving or riding. Pa would hitch the colt to an older finished horse and then throw Bull up on the colt thinking that the colt really wasn't going to go anywhere. They broke in and trained many horses together. When Bull moved to the farm, he was always around horses, coon dogs, and coon hunting at night. There was no TV in Pa's house, so Bull spent his time playing in the barn, riding horses, and hunting. After graduating high school, Bull became a Marine. After his service, he became a Union Ironworker. He team roped in his spare time, com peting in the Kan-Rope Association. In 1986, he met his future wife Sandy Bryant. Sandy was the Fine Arts Specialist for the city of Topeka and showed American Quarter Horses in her spare time. They had both sold saddles and tack and discovered that they shared a love for fancy handmade bits. Their business, Bits and Blankets, soon turned into a full time job for Sandy. For several years they bought and resold bits handmade by renowned bit makers. One day, Jerry Cates told Bull that he should enter the bit making trade and

proceeded to teach Bull. About that time, he met Don Rogers, who took Bull under his wing and taught him more tricks of the trade. After that, things just progressed until Bull was a full time bit maker, with Sandy hand sawing all the silver for the bits and spurs. Ten years ago, they added a full-time associate, Hilario Reyes. The three of them work full time making bits and spurs that are balanced correctly and work correctly. They still make time to "horse around," and Bull participates in trap shooting as well. Bull’s only regret is that he didn't start building bits and spurs 30 years earlier.

BRAD LUND Brad Lund lives in LaCygne, KS with wife Amy and son, Garrett, where they own and operate Lund Performance Horses. Brad specializes in working cow horse and roping. Brad is a 17-time American Quarter Horse Association World Champion and has won the American Quarter Horse Association Super Horse three times. Brad has a lifetime earnings of $960,000.

BREED GROUPS

Andalusian The Andalusian, also known as the Pure Spanish Horse or PRE (pura raza española, is a horse breed from the Iberian Peninsula, where its ancestors have lived for thousands of years. The Andalusian has been recognized as a distinct breed since the 15th century, and its confor mation has changed very little over the centuries. Throughout its his tory, it has been known for its prowess as a war horse, and was prized by the nobility. The breed was used as a tool of diplomacy by the Spanish government and kings across Europe rode and owned Spanish horses. During the 19th century, warfare, disease and cross breeding reduced herd numbers dramatically, and despite some recovery in the late 19th century, the trend continued into the early 20th century. Exports of Andalusians from Spain were restricted until the 1960s, but the breed has since spread throughout the world, despite their low population. In 2010, there were more than 185,000 registered Andalusians worldwide. Isadoro was imported for Spain as a 4 year old. He is a Level 2 dressage horse and lived in Texas for most of his career. He is now owned and shown by 12 year old Maddy Gatrel.

Appaloosa The Appaloosa is an American Color Breed prized for being quick footed and steady. While the breed is mostly exhibited as a stock horse, the Appaloosa Horse Club accepts crosses from the registries of the Arabian, Thoroughbred, and American Quarter horse. The Appaloosa Horse Club was chartered in 1938, and is still located in Moscow, Idaho today. Presently, the ApHC is an international breed registry with more than 635,000 Appaloosas recorded and 33,000 members and growing. Today Appaloosas are used in nearly every equine discipline, including racing, jumping, dressage, reining, roping, gam ing, pleasure and endurance. Outside the competitive arena Appaloosas are used as working ranch horses, trail horses, lesson horses and as safe and reli able family horses. The ApHC is dedicated to developing and providing pro grams and services to support Appaloosas and Appaloosa advocates through both competitive and non-competitive events. The Appaloosa is most recog nized with the snowy blanket across the hips and large irregular shaped spots within the blanket. Appaloosas may have any based color from black, bay, red as well as the muted tones of cream, dun, or grey
